DIY Barbie Piñata

| Thursday, August 26, 2010
In the west, a piñata is a must-have in every kiddie party. It is one of the highlights of the celebration other than singing a Happy Birthday song, blowing the cake and opening of gifts.

Before piñata was introduced in the Philippines, Filipinos already have the tradition of Paluan ng Palayok or "Smash the Clay Pot". These days, Paluan ng Palayok is not that popular anymore. It was replaced by the Pabitin which is a suspension of goodies, usually candies and toys, hanging from a colorful wooden rack. Unlike the first two games which are played by smashing, the Pabitin is played by pulling it up and down over a crowd who are waiting to grab the items.

This is my first time to make a piñata. I don't know a store that sells something like this, so I thought of doing it myself for my daughter's upcoming Barbie-themed party.

My kind of piñata is not for smashing, though. My daughter and her expected guest are too young for that, so I designed it for pulling. In short, this is a pull down piñata. Refer to the tutorial below if you wish to make a simple pink Barbie piñata just like my creation.

How to Make a Barbie Piñata

Materials:
-scissors
-5 pcs pink Japanese paper
-small box
-glue
-curling ribbon of assorted colors
-1 1/2 meters of pink yarn
-Barbie images (any image of your choice)
-small toys and candies

Procedure:
1. Create the handle of the piñata by attaching the 1 meter yarn to the box. Make sure it is sturdy enough for hanging.
2. Cover the box with Japanese paper.
3. Cut strips of Japanese paper and create fringe.
4. Glue pieces of fringe paper all over the box.
5. Prepare the Barbie image of your choice. In my case, I used a different image for the front and back side of the box.
6. Make a separate fringe paper of different texture and color for the base of the images.
7. Glue each image to its base together before glueing them down to the sides of the piñata.
9. Attach the curled ribbons and the half meter yarn at the bottom of the box.
10. Fill the box with toys and candies and hang for the game.
