Children Biking Safety

>> Thursday, March 11, 2010

The sun was up and shining. It looked like a perfect day to go out for my little one and have fun with her friends at the park. So, I made her wear her pink tights, pink socks, pink sneakers, and pink hat. Then, I grabbed her pink baby bicycle which baba bought two weeks ago.

Her bike has two smaller wheels for support, so she's safe no matter how much pushing she does on the pedals. She doesn't have any cycling gears yet, but I already have a list of things that she must learn when she's old enough to bike alone. They are the following.

12 Important Rules to Teach Kids for Biking Safety:
1. Ask a permission from a parent or guardian before going out.
2. Wear comfortable clothing.
3. Wear a helmet and other safety gears.
4. Always two hands on the handlebars if possible.
5. Obey all traffic signs and signals.
6. If there's a bicycle pathway in your area, use that lane alone.
7. Do not race with other riders to avoid accidents.
8. Do not ride on busy streets.
9. Do not ride at night.
10. Stop and look before crossing a roadway or intersection.
11. Keep right. Never ever ride against traffic.
12. Watch out for road humps and holes.

I started riding bicycles when I was 13. I had so much fun! My cousins and I would stroll the whole town on our bikes. That was the reason why I was so "maitim" when I was a kid kasi kahit tanghaling tapat nagbibike kami around our small town in Ilocos.

Grabe, amazing sis. Kaya na ni Askim magride ng bike? Si Jam hindi pa. :( Her pedia already told us that Jamjam is kinda delayed when it comes to physical development. Do you know that she just started sitting up on her own when she was a year old, and she only started walking on her own when she was one year and 3 months old? Nabobother talaga ako pag nakikita ko yung ibang kids who are as young as my child yet mas marami silang naaachieve na milestones than her. We were even advised by the pedia to have Jamjam checked by a developmental pedia, problem is walang developmental pedia dito sa Baguio. :( I'm really worried talaga. I just say to myself that not all children are the same.

Lots of love,

Thanks jinke, for the correction. Got it changed.

That is a cool bike for Aşkım. She's gorgeous! Thanks for the safety tips. Look forward for George to ride in his first bicycle when he gets to that age. :)

@golden: compare to other kids, she is in the middle when it comes to height and weight.. she practiced walking as early as 6 months, but she became very independent at over 1 year old na den.. before, takot sya mag-slide kahit don sa pinakamababa na slide pero ngayon, she can slide using the highest slide in the park.. AT, nakabaliktad pa sya pagnag-slide minsan.. haha.. natutunan nya kasi sa ibang bata..

in my observation, nong wala pa syang madaming kalaro at limited un playground nya, mabagal ko sya nakitaan ng development in walking, talking, etc. pero ngayon na lagi sya sa playground (every morning and afternoon) at madami sya nameet na bata, she is smarter, braver, and more confident.. try mo sya mag-interact with other kids sis.. no need to see a special doctor.. make her play with older cousins..tapos wag mo laging alalayan.. let her walk, get up, get things on her own.. just try :D

@sweetmom: di pa nya masyado abot ang pedal sis pero nakakausad sya paunti-unti.. sige, bike si askim tapos angkas nalang si lotte.. hehe! :D

@mel: you are welcome mel! bagay den yan sa boys talaga ang biking :)

Hi sis! Thanks you so much. I really appreciate your words of encouragement. It feels so good to tell my mommy problems to other mommies like you. I'll try to expose Jamjam more. :)

Lots of love,

Aha, ikaw pala si Utot Mong PInk, no wonder lahat ng suot ng anak mo eh pink, except for the shirt. Anyways, my oldest son started riding a bicycle by the age of 3, but the 3 little ones never had a chance to ride bikes, they ride some kind of mini tractors and stuff. In our residence there is no way they can ride bikes, otherwise, they would end up in our font neighbor's yard. I would have to take them to the park, then they rather play at the swing or slide. Great blog you have here. Thanks for coming to my site, sa GT entry ko about showing flesh..
