Women in Headscarves

This morning, I caught my babe watching a certain Turkish news about the rules in wearing headscarves for women. He said, there is a debate whether covered Turkish women will be allowed to freely have access of college or higher education and career life. Usually, no covered women can be seen in any universities in Turkey. Those women who refuse to take off their headscarves end up pursuing higher education in other countries.

I think, the ban on headscarves is a violation of the right to religious practice and expression of these women. I mean, nobody should be denied of his/her right for education regardless of his sexual orientation, ethnicity, beliefs or religion. There should always be equality.

Turkey is a Muslim country, my babe said, but it is way different compare to other countries with the same religious background. Some Turkish women cover their heads. Their hair as well as the neck and sleeves are fully covered. They wear a coat or dress to cover the shape of their bodies, too. On the other hand, others enjoy their right to wear shorts, tank tops, and even bikini in summer.

In my babe's family, only older women wear headscarves. His mom doesn't even wear them on regular basis. She wears a headscarf in weddings or other formal occasions as respect to her mother-in-law. In weddings, women can wear backless and sleeveless gowns and their hair are styled in different ways as seen in the pictures.

In the Philippines, some Muslim women wear headscarves, but others don't. I also met an Indonesian Muslim in Hong Kong who didn't wear headscarves in her life. I think, wearing headscarves for women with Muslim beliefs is a matter of choice. If you want to strictly comply to the teachings of your religion, then wear it.
Well, just wear whatever you feel is comfortable.
