Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder primarily affecting adolescent girls and young women, characterized by pathological fear of becoming fat, distorted body image, excessive dieting, and emaciation.
Yeah, people who are suffering from this kind of disorder are looking gaunt or extremely thin and bony. In Asia, cases such this are rare. I only once heard of a certain Japanese girl who died of anorexia. Most of the stories I heard are those of famous celebrities and models like Karen Carpenter (US), Victoria Beckham (UK, Luisel and Eliana Ramos (Uruguay), and Ana Carolina Reston (Brazil).
Today, while talking to my student about skipping meals and dieting, Anorexia Nervosa suddenly crossed my mind. I googled the campaign of the French young woman named Isabelle Caro. I thought of asking my students some questions in line with the topic, but we ran out of time. That's why I am trying to write here again.
I personally, salute Isabelle Caro (in picture above) for being able to bravely pose nude in front of the camera and tell people that being anorexic is not beautiful. I have read her story and I got deeply moved. I hope that she'll soon recover and live a longer life as inspiration to others who are struggling with the same problem.
I hope that more mothers would encourage their young and precious daughters to eat healthily. That more modeling agencies would ban size 0 models and encourage their girls to consider living in wellness. That more and more people would not judge others with their body size. That more women will be comfortable with their bodies. Please.
